How to Decode Dreams & What they Mean

By Our Friend & Dream Analyst David Ruben...

Dear dreamers,

I have experienced dream states that are similar to near death experience and OBE ergo, glimpsing the afterlife as close as we can get while still breathing. The reason is that I have had all 3 separate experiences that were life altering, and total affirmation of human consciousness existing in multi-dimensionality. That in fact, we can alter actual reality by insight gained in an altered state whether lucid dream, OBE or NDE. That, if we do not comprehend the messages emanating from our subconscious we might lose the grandest part of what it really means to be alive. And in fact, as the old saying states: Its not what you see that’s the problem… its what you don’t see, (in dreams) that we all NEED to see, that is the key to unlocking our ultimate potential.

The Art of Decoding Dreams and Their Meanings

At least half of all adults have had one lucid dream in their lifetime. Many have reported spontaneous lucid dreams. The subconscious, synchronistic or otherwise inexplicable meaning of our dreams come about with heightened awareness and focus. A willingness to excavate that which we cannot understand with open eyes. This is why keeping track of and discussing dreams can lead to decoding their meanings.

There's typically two levels of dreams:

1. Level 1: that of all kinds of noises and nonsense “instant replay of the day” dreams.

2. Level 2: the other side inviting the exploration of the subconscious, finding the deeper meaning, digging down into our dreams, to more fulfill what you need to know to grow in your waking life.

Such a disparity can arise for a multitude of reasons, but I'm going to chalk it up to something simple. Lack of objectivity. Understanding our dreams takes focus and awareness to master the world of our subconscious minds.

Some have dreams every night. They are wild, and wonderful and weird. The question is: is there a message in their content? To know for sure you must maintain a constant interest in cultivating a deeper understanding of the story of your dreams in your waking life. The more vivid and dynamic the dream, the more it can impact your daily life. But many people are afraid to go into the deeper self, scared of being “out of control. But, to grow, we must be willing to take the journey of discovery the more interesting and sometimes downright bizarre messages dreams have to offer.

Dreaming and the meaning of those dreams is a discipline I fully believe in developing and mastering. Such an incredible amount of information can be gained as our eyes dart around behind our eyelids.

Any time is a perfect time for focusing on dream-time journeys. You will need a few things: Paper, writing tool, and patience. A meditation which helps with the ability to reach lucid dream sleep.

Keep a journal and pen/pencil or a recording device by your bedside. Right there within arms reach. With a little practice your dreams, and even your nightmares are going to be something you look forward to with no proviso’s!

What you're going to do is write down anything and everything as soon as you wake-up. The most important part is to just make a record. Do not edit anything. If all that comes to mind is: purple, river, plane, fight and kittens...write it down. The details tend to come with more practice.

Once you've been doing this for awhile, slight details and sensory perceptions similar to waking life will enter your night-life. The stories will become increasingly cohesive and you will gain more awareness and thus control over your unconscious. You can even ask yourself to focus on something before you sleep. I often wonder about ideas or answers to difficult life situations this way. My dreams always shine some light on the situation, which invariably makes my waking life better and more fulfilling.

Lucid dreams give you the ability to interact with your dreams. In the lucid state, you are more willing to confront threats and as a result, become more self confident. When you achieve lucidity, you can use it as a tool to improve your sports game, to rehearse for a speech, or to solve a problem in your waking life.

Even in your day to day life, you can use lucid dreams to ask the boss for a raise, prepare for a first date, overcome phobias, get over writer's block, etc. Lucid dreams can help you visualize the future, and go through an event in your mind before it actually occurs. It helps to overcome fears and anxieties. The application of lucid dreams is limited only to your willingness for growth.

Because brain activity during the dream state is the same as during a real life event, what you "learn" or "practice" in your lucid dream state is similar to the training and preparation you do in the waking world. Your neuronal patterns are already being conditioned.

Steps to Improving Lucid Dreaming

1. Throughout the day, while you are awake, ask yourself, "Am I fully present?" anytime something odd happens or even when nothing out of the ordinary happens. The trick is not to answer the question. Come up with a consistent way to check if you are fully awake or daydreaming. For example, checking the time on a clock and then quickly check it again. As you keep asking yourself this question during the day, the question will become second nature. Eventually, you will automatically ask the question in your dreams. When you do your check to see if you are awake or dreaming, you are well on your way to lucidity.

2. Utilize a breathing method to enter lucidity. As you are laying down to go to sleep, start breathing. With each inhale and exhale feel yourself relaxing – letting go, Allow yourself to feel your body in your bed.

3. Identify your dream signals. These are objects, images or actions in your dream that serve as cues or markers to let you know that you are dreaming. Anything can be a dream signal and is unique to each individual dreamer. It may help to read through your dream journal and select an image that constantly appears in your dreams. By selecting a recurring image, then it has a better chance of appearing in your future dreams.

4. Your dream signs to let you know that you are dreaming. When an anomaly or something impossible occurs in your dream, do not ignore it or try to rationalize it. Let this odd occurrence be an indicator that you are dreaming. Some common dream signs include flying, walking through walls or the appearance of someone who is dead in real life.

5. Finally, allow your lucid dreams, but do not force them, as your efforts may have an opposite effect. You may use the above techniques in conjunction with one another. Always be willing to have a lucid dream.

As you improve your objectivity, in dreaming, you can even learn the hidden meaning of life’s mysteries.. Your sense of smell and touch will become heightened. Before going to bed, know that you want to dream and explore. Do not try and design or direct the dream. Let the dream occur. Then intuitively choose how you wish to interact and change your relationship with the dream.
